De verzamelnaam polycyclische aromatische koolwaterstoffen of PAK's omvat honderden chemisch verwante, persistente organische polluenten, variërend in structuur en schadelijkheid.
PAK's komen vrij bij onvolledige verbranding, zoals bijvoorbeeld door houtverbranding in kachels en open haarden, verbranding van fossiele brandstoffen (bv. verkeer en gebouwenverwarming), bij productie van staal en cokes, in sigarettenrook, door afvalverbranding (bv. vuurtjes in tuinen).
